ドイツ最大の貨物用蒸気機関車です。当時ドイツでは貨物用蒸気機関車として44形が2000両近く量産されていましたが、第二次世界大戦に向かい軍事輸送量が激増、さらに大型の蒸気機関車が求められていたのです。機関車の出力を上げるため、ボイラーの仕様圧力は破格の20kg/c㎡、動力部は3気筒方式となっています。

一方45形は、巨大なボイラーに対しての火力不足が致命的となり、欠陥機関車とも言われております。結局28両作られただけにとどまりました。この模型では45形の特徴のひとつとなっている3気筒を正確に再現。構造上かなりの重さになり、信太郎のコレクションの中でも重い模型となっています。
